Pangya World Championship 2011 Review

The 2011 Pangya World Championship has come to an end. Players from around the world gave it their best effort in front of a live audience. The tension was immense, our eyes were clued to the screen, and the excitement was soaring to make this a memorable experience to us all. The championship will determine who will triumph and walk away with the prize money. The event was held at Akiba Square in Tokyo, Japan. After hearing a few words from the president of Ntreevsoft, Jun Young Kim, the Pangya World Championship will begin!

1) Players

2) Team Tournament

1st Round: West Wiz - 9 Holes - 20 Minutes
Group A: Japan (43 pts) vs. Thailand (29 pts)
Group B: Korea (37 pts) vs. Global (35 pts)

Rain occurred on Hole 3 so all players will have to take extra caution on setting up the power right if they want to shoot from the rough area. XeNoGeaR has been patiently setting up his shot on Hole 7 for quite some time, but eventually he successfully made a close call chip-in for Albatross. Global and Korea scores were close to even during the whole round so it's still anyone's game. Japan vs. Thailand group has finished first, and Japan took a huge lead early on in the round while Thailand struggled to catch up. With only one player remaining on the last hole in Global vs. Korea group, we focused on Karti using a Safety item with strong winds. Karti successfully chipped it in to conclude the 1st round. With Korea having 2 points more than them, it was not enough to get Global into the 2nd round. Korea vs. Japan will face off in the next round.

2nd Round: Blue Lagoon - 18 Holes - 40 Minutes
Korea (67 pts) vs. Japan (77 pts)

Majority of players on Hole 1 are playing it safe to Toma-backspin and leave the normal backspin shot for Hole 2 to build up the combo gauge. BB_Same got off to a bad start having to use a safety on Hole 1 from the fairway, but made the chip. Rain occurred on Hole 9 with low winds. Japan demonstrates their skills by dunking several holes, while Korea plays safe with toma and power backspin shots. Igarisan showing a lot of promise by beam impacting a majority of holes. Nang_Man surprisingly missed the Hole-in-One, and had to putt for Albatross on Hole 15. Hole 17 looked like it gave several players a hard time. Brunel from Japan is the last one left on Hole 18. Showing confidence, he uses a double powershot toma and it goes right in that bumps him up to 2nd place. In the end, Japan receives 1st place.

Team Tournament Result
1st Place: Japan (77 pts)
2nd Place: Korea (67 pts)

3) Staff Team Game

1st Round: Pink Wind - 9 Holes - 20 Minutes
Global Staff: Moshup, Nikei (6 + 7 = 13 pts)
Thailand Staff: Nut, Tom (4 + 5 = 9 pts)
Korea Staff: QuickFire, Best_Melo (3 + 8 = 11 pts)
Japan Staff: Mitsuba, Natsumikan (1 + 2 = 3 pts)

Korea and Japan GMs are demonstrating that they can play like pros too, then Thailand was getting some attention too. Rain starts on Hole 3. Hole 5 gave trouble to a few of the staff members. Most of them are using powershots for easy chip-in attempts. On Hole 7, Ini3_Tom hits a normal tomahawk shot that landed .46 yards from the hole. That would have been the highlight of this entire event if it went in. Ini3_Tom was also praised for chipping on Hole 9 with a Safety item. Sadly, the GM in last place on the scoreboard is from Korea, but in the end, they ranked in 3rd while Global's on last place. Japan GMs wins it for their server.

Staff Team Game Result
1st Place: Japan Staff (3 pts)
2nd Place: Thailand Staff (9 pts)

4) Singles Tournament

1st Round: White Wiz - 18 Holes - 40 Minutes
1st Place: Igarisan (JP) -37 | 12249 PP
2nd Place: YoSso (KR) -35 | 10544 PP
3rd Place: brunel (JP) -35 | 9753 PP
4th Place: BB_Same (KR) -33 | 9391 PP

Starting on White Wiz. Players are taking it safe by avoiding going to the ice area on Hole 1. Flat surface may be great and all, but having the bar move fast for a chance to miss Pangya can be fatal. Hole 2 has 1m wind, so dunking that pin is the most effective choice for that situation. Igarisan says screw the green slope and goes for a dunk on Hole 5. A few players bogeyed on Hole 8. Igarisan from the tee on Hole 8 goes through the ice tunnel on the left side, and then uses silent wind for easy Eagle to win that hole for points. Really bold move. [if]B'cause uses his silent wind on Hole 9 for a successful dunk. Several players made a backspin Hole-in-One on Hole 12 with strong winds. On hole 14, Igarisan uses curve mastery from the tee, and then safety with double powershot for a successful Albatross chip-in. Igarisan staying strong in first place representing Japan. Both score and pangs will now be carried over to the next round.

2nd Round: Deep Inferno - 18 Holes - 40 Minutes
1st Place: Igarisan (JP) -36 | 12971 PP
2nd Place: YoSso (KR) -33 | 11187 PP
3rd Place: BB_Same (KR) -31 | 10621 PP
4th Place: brunel (JP) -29 | 8866 PP

This is it, the final round on Deep Inferno. Either the pressure is on, or their stamina is running thin. Some people got off to a rough start on first few holes. Emersonesf4 starts off by chipping Hole 3 and now things are heating up now. The main attraction of this round goes to Igarisan for being a dunking machine. Thailand attempts to mimic, but most of the dunks didn't go so well. Igarisan is running low on items with only silent wind remaining. Igarisan plans to conserve his powershots starting on Hole 15 by hitting a max power roll-in shot since the pin was too far away for a power backspin attempt. Back on Hole 14, Karti was shown making a nice Albatross. Igarisan was in trouble when he missed Pangya for power backspin on Hole 17 and landed past the green. Igarisan gambles for a 6 iron dunk attempt that didn't make it, so he had to putt for par. Igarisan uses silent wind as I predicted earlier on Hole 18 and makes it in. YoSso on Hole 18 says that he doesn't need silent wind and performs a 4 iron chip-in. This round was quite intense, and I'm sure that after they were done, their weights has lifted from their shoulders. Well done competitors.

Singles Tournament Result
1st Place: Igarisan (JP) -73 | 25220 PP
2nd Place: YoSso (KR) -68 | 21731 PP
3rd Place: BB_Same (KR) -64 | 20012 PP
4th Place: Brunel (JP) -64 | 18619 PP

5) Conclusion

Japan has dominated the competition. For this week's poll, I have asked which servers you think will win and the majority has read the future clearly that Japan will be the champion. The championship was organized very well and it ended about one hour earlier than expected. I did not plan on staying up that long, but the Championship turned out so well that I doubt I'll be able to fall asleep while it's still going on. With around 500 people in Akiba square, and 3,000 viewers on Ustream, the first Pangya World Championship turned out great, and I'm happy for them.

Here are a few shout-outs that I would like to make before I conclude my lengthily review:

- Thailand needs to take their time on their shots.

- I like how Global's flag shows the entire world since there's no single American player representing.

- For those that missed the entire show or parts of it, I have it recorded and saved in the archives. I don't like how the archives made the video small, but it'll have to do. You'll hear me talk most of the time in the video.

- You can tell I put a lot of heart and effort into this review. This shows how much PWC made an impact to make me to make me realize why I still play Pangya. (even though it's been over a month since I've last played...)

- Before the single tournament started, the announcer tried to get Karti to wave toward the crowd for the second time, but he managed to show that's he's grateful to be there while keeping a game face on.

- Babynuko finds Igarisan and GM_Natsumikan very moe~

- I like to see Igarisan vs. Moka one day.

- I might start logging on Pangya Global once in awhile.

- I wonder what Jozdrumz thinks of that female host.

- I'm so glad PWC ended about 1 hour earlier.

- I give Global players huge credit for playing in the world championship. You substituted some of the top players who couldn't make it, and proved that you had courage to play in front of people and the internet. I will admit that it would make me extremely nervous playing in that kind of environment. Also, congrats on almost reaching the 2nd round on the Team Tournament matchup. I don't see many Korean players play West Wiz all that much.

- If mygo watches this, will he gain inspiration to play Pangya again?

- Total Characters used from our 16 players. Arin: 4 | Nuri: 3 | Cecilia: 2 | Kooh: 2 | Azer, Hana, Lucia, Nell, & Kaz: 1 each
